Remark — Difference from "isolated point" and from "belonging to "
- An isolated point of is a point of that has a neighbourhood in which no other point of falls. An isolated point is not an accumulation point.
- An accumulation point may not belong to : for example is an accumulation point of even though it is not inside .
- A point may or may not be an accumulation point: in , the point belongs to but is isolated, whereas belongs to and is an accumulation point.
In short: “accumulation point” describes how the points of cluster around , and it is independent of whether or not is an element of .
