Every time we carry out a random experiment (an experiment whose result cannot be predicted with certainty) we can list all the possible outcomes: their set is the sample space Ω\Omega. An event is a subset of Ω\Omega, and to each event we associate a probability between 00 and 11. When a group of events covers the whole of Ω\Omega without overlapping, we speak of a partition: one and only one of them occurs.
