Unlike isometries, dilations do not preserve distances but multiply them by scale factors. When the two factors (horizontal and vertical) coincide, the dilation is uniform and is called a homothety: the resulting figure is similar to the original. We shall see the definition, the effect on the equations of curves and the classic example of the ellipse as a dilated circle.
