A line and a circle may fail to meet, touch at a single point, or cut across at two points: these are the positions of an external, tangent and secant line. This section shows how to establish which case occurs, both by solving the line-circle system and looking at the discriminant, and by computing the distance of the centre from the line and comparing it with the radius.
