Solving an equation means isolating the unknown, and to do so we need rules that authorise us to modify the equality without changing its solutions. These are the two principles of equivalence: the first allows us to add or remove the same quantity to both sides, the second to multiply or divide by the same quantity different from zero. With these two tools every first-degree equation reduces to the form ax=bax=b.
