There is a third use of the percentage, distinct from discount and interest, that we shall use continually in physics and statistics: the percentage as a measure of variation with respect to a reference. In this section we define absolute error, relative error and percentage error, show why the same absolute error may be negligible or catastrophic depending on the reference, and observe that percentages and probability are, at bottom, the same mathematical object.
